AFBC Launches Investigation into Mismanagement of Maputo Prize Money, Calls for Accountability
The African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) has raised serious concerns about the mismanagement of prize money from the AFBC competition held in Maputo, Mozambique, from September 9-18, 2022. Allegations suggest that athletes from three national federations — Algeria ($80,000), Mozambique ($55,000), and Zambia ($47,000) — have not received their full prize money.
In an official statement, the AFBC clarified that its current president, Mr. Eyassu Wossen, was not in office during the time of the event and bears no responsibility for the discrepancies. Since assuming his role, Mr. Eyassu has prioritized athlete welfare, particularly regarding financial entitlements.
The AFBC attributed the mismanagement to the former AFBC President, Mr. Mendouga Bertrand, and the former Secretary General, Mr. Kalong Andre Basile. The AFBC Ethics Committee is currently investigating the matter to establish accountability and recommend corrective actions.
In addition to its internal probe, the AFBC has reached out to the International Boxing Association (IBA) to facilitate the disbursement of the unpaid prize money. The confederation also noted that it has not received any Maputo prize money from the IBA in 2024.
To promote transparency, the AFBC has provided a detailed breakdown of the Maputo prize money disbursement in an attached document sent to all national federations.
This development highlights the AFBC's commitment to ensuring financial accountability and safeguarding the rights of its athletes. Further updates on the investigation and disbursement of funds are expected as the Ethics Committee continues its inquiry.
